When I learnt Welcome to Thornbury was on the drawing board, I was rather intrigued, but I could never have imagined this combined food truck park and beer garden would be so impressive and such a game changer for Melbourne’s food trucks.

I’ve been a fan of Melbourne’s flourishing food truck scene since the get go and still find it a really fascinating part of the diverse Melbourne food scene. Whilst I’ve grabbed some great grub from the food trucks over the years, the setting hasn’t always been advantageous to a pleasant dining experience. I still recall using my car bonnet as a makeshift dining table for many a food truck feast. Thankfully, the need to remove hot sauce and various other condiments from my car paintwork will now be just a memory with the opening of Welcome to Thornbury.

The site is equipped to hold up to six food trucks at any given time, although particularly early in the week there may be fewer trucks trading. Reportedly over forty food trucks are on board with the line-up rotating on a daily basis. I recommend checking the schedule on the Welcome to Thornbury website if you are keen to track down a particular food truck on a given day.

Whilst the food trucks are very much a key facet of this location, this really is one very exciting venue in its own right with a variety of seating options both indoors & outdoors and capacity for in excess of 700 patrons. There’s beer and cider on tap, craft beer by the bottle or can, cocktail jugs and a small selection of wines by the glass & bottle.

If you’re not a local, getting there by public transport is easy enough with the 86 tram passing by the door and Croxton (Northcote) train station a five minute walk away. If you’re the cycling type, there’s even a bicycle rack out front to park your fixie.

The venue is even child friendly, although being a licensed venue, adult supervision is required. Dogs are welcome too provided they are kept on a leash. If you’re yet to check out Melbourne’s food trucks or simply want to unwind and enjoy a few drinks, Welcome to Thornbury should definitely be on your hit list.
