Signage that reads “Coffee Lounge Entertainment” doesn’t exactly advertise the fact a place serves up a remarkably good steak sanga. They’ve been serving this sensational steak roll at the location for well over a decade, but who knew? Thankfully this surreptitious spot has now been reborn as For Heaven’s Steaks and the installation of bright signage on the shopfront will make it a lot easier to locate.
The business is now operated by Paul Di Genova and his partner Santo Santo. Paul recently took over his father Mimmo’s share of the partnership which formed back in 2002. Paul is in his late 30’s and after working as a baker and pastry chef for 21 years, was ready for a new challenge.
Whilst the venue now has a new name, it still retains most of the original fixtures from decades ago. Personally, I reckon the original fit out and slightly daggy décor gives the place a certain charm. No doubt Paul will face some challenges attempting to inject new ideas into the business whilst appeasing the older generation of locals (mostly Italians) who have patronised the coffee lounge for years.
Their signature dish is the Clayton Classic Steak Roll ($9) which includes genuinely tender Scotch fillet teamed with roasted peppers, lettuce, tomato, cheese, egg & salami. It’s served on a crusty white roll sourced from a local Vietnamese owned bakery. There’s also The Italian wherein the steak is substituted with an Italian style sausage that’s been split & grilled.
If you’re feeling hungry, try the Italian Classic Double ($14) which combines both steak and sausage with all the standard accompaniments. I gave this a go on my second visit and left extremely satisfied.
The location is fully licensed and offers beer, wine and spirits, although don’t expect to find craft beers or natural wines just yet. Given the Italian focus, there’s also coffee available with beans by Perfetto coffee.
